Skyros is the southernmost island of the Northern Sporades. Located east of Euboea, which lies around 35 km and it is the largest island of Sporades (210 sq. Km.) With a population of 2,994 inhabitants.
In Skyros you will find beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters, the picturesque village with narrow streets leading to the Castle of Chora, the Monastery of St. George which dominates the rock of the country, landscapes that fascinate and scenery for all tastes. Hospitable people and local dishes with local traditional products will give one more reason to fall in love with this alternative island. Culinary delights for all tastes and recipes that remain for centuries in the island. Besides tradition, customs of Skyros still hold until today.
The northern part of the island is full of pine forest that reaches the coast while the southern part of the island is completely dry. The legend also says that in the past Skyros was two separate islands. One is today the northern part of the island belonging to the Sporades and the other is the southern part belonged to the Cyclades. The topography allows the myth to be true in a way.
In mythology and in accordance with a post-Homeric myth, Thetis hid in Skyros island her son Achilles, to prevent him from going to fight in Troy. Dressed like a girl called Pyrrha (red or blonde) is hidden among the daughters of King Lycomedes. This costume does not prevent him from having a son, Neoptolemus, with the princess. Odysseus comes to the island disguised as a peddler and of course all the girls show their interest in textiles, perfumes and jewelry. The only "girl", which is interested in weapons is, of course, Pyrrha and Odysseus discovers Achilles and finally takes him to fight in Troy.
